Scottish EDGE

Scotland’s largest business funding competition, supporting early stage high-growth potential startups through funding, relationship management and business support.

About The Venture

Scottish EDGE is Scotland’s largest business funding competition, supporting start-ups, social enterprises and charities with high-growth potential through a combination of grants, loans and wraparound support.

Since launching as a Community Interest Company in 2014, Scottish EDGE has supported more than 700 businesses and awarded more than £30 million in funding. The organisation has also contributed to the creation of more than 4,657 jobs, £812 million in additional turnover and £500 million in follow-on investment across the Scottish economy.

Backed by organisations including the Hunter Foundation, Royal Bank of Scotland, the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise, Scottish EDGE combines significant prize funding with relationship management, alumni support and business development opportunities. Its distinctive grant-and-loan structure has also enabled the creation of a self-sustaining revolving fund that supports long-term impact and reinvestment.

Building on a decade of operational success in Scotland, the organisation is now exploring opportunities to scale its proven competition methodology internationally, supporting entrepreneurial ecosystems in other countries and regions.

The Challenge

Scottish EDGE approached The Ventures Lab with a clear strategic ambition: to commercialise and license its proven competition model beyond Scotland. While the organisation had a strong track record and established reputation nationally, expanding internationally required a different strategic and operational approach. The team needed support to validate customer demand across different sectors and territories, including governments, corporate accelerators and international ecosystem partners. There was also a need to assess different delivery models, benchmark against international comparators and strengthen investment readiness as the organisation considered future IT modernisation and growth capital requirements. Alongside this, the organisation wanted external challenge and accountability as it transitioned from a nationally focused operator to a potential international licensor and ecosystem infrastructure provider.
